Root Canal Treatment Pasadena

What is a Root Canal?

A root canal is used treat an infection or inflammation within the pulp of a tooth. The pulp is the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed due to decay, trauma, or repeated dental procedures, it can cause severe pain and may lead to an abscess if left untreated.

During a root canal procedure, Dr. Mary Senstad or her endodontist removes the infected or inflamed pulp. The tooth is then cleaned, disinfected, and sealed to prevent further infection. A dental crown is then placed over the tooth to restore its strength and functionality.

Root canal therapy can relieve pain, preserve the natural tooth structure, and prevent the spread of infection to surrounding tissues.

Signs and Symptoms

Some signs and symptoms that may require root canal treatment are:

  • Peristent Pain- throbbing dull achy pain or a sharp pain that does not go away.

  • Sensitivity to hot/cold – Especially if it lingers for more than 20 seconds after the heat or cold is gone.

  • Tender/swollen gums – Sometimes with a small swelling or bump in the gums near the tooth.

  • Discoloration – A dark or gray tooth could mean the nerve is dying.

  • Pain when chewing or touching the tooth – Especially if it feels different from the others.

  • Cracked/chipped tooth – Damage can expose the pulp (nerve), leading to infection.
